Is it possible to run a program in VBox that is used to transfer files from an old CNC machine onto the laptop running Windows 10? If I run the old Dos program in VBox it opens and runs, but when I try to transfer the files, it will never communicate with the laptop and move them. Is this a limitation that can't be fixed?

VBox would be vDos.
The CNC is connected to the laptop by a serial port/device/bridge? Could be your DOS program tries/needs to initialize the serial port protocol (speed, bits, parity…). vDos just ignores that for various reasons. You would have to setup the serial port before starting vDos. Find out what parameters your CNC needs, set those with MODE COMx … at the Windows command line. If that works, eventually setup the port/device in the Device Manager.

I forgot: You also (first) have to tell vDos that COMx (probably COM1) isn't to be considered as a printing device. You have to add this to config.txt: COM1="COM1":
