I have been using vDos very successfully to run WordPerfect 4.2 on three Windows 10 64-bit computers (two desktops and a laptop). I have purchased a new laptop which is also Windows 10 64-bit and copied over the WP program and vDos. The program runs but I cannot use the F5 key to view directories. I get the message "Put WordPerfect disk back in drive and press any key". I can save files and open files but not view any directories. If I try, I get the error message.
I have vDos in a folder called vDos. I have WordPerfect 4.2 in a folder called WP.
My vDos autoexec.txt file basically states:
use c: c:\wp
C:\wp.exe
del c:\{WP}.*
EXIT
@echo OFF
Again, this works fine on three computers with the same operating system and programs. I have spent two days trying to fix this, but no luck.
I have also tried downloading the latest version of vDos and the same thing still happens.
Does anyone have a suggestion? I would really appreciate it.

My original response disappeared, something like:
If you copied the vDos and WP files and directories of a PC to the laptop, WP has no knowledge it is running somewhere else. And so should function exactly the same.
Perhaps Edward Mendelson will know what's with F5 - "Put...".
As mentioned in a later email, check if F5 is actually passed on as the 'normal' F5 by the laptop. Not for instance Ctrl+F5 or some other key(combination).

Thank you very much Jos.
I will check with Dell on that.

Before contacting Dell you could run attached SCODE.COM program at the vDos command prompt. That will show what key is transmitted by the laptop. Jos Attachments:SCODE.COM (2.97 KB)

Thank you very much Jos.
I ran Scode on the laptop with a problem and the results were:
Key stroke F5 Scan Code: Hex Dec 3F 63 ASCII code: hex dec 00 0 Code in: AX BIOS 3F00 3F00
I then ran Scode on a computer in which vDos/WordPerfect is running properly and the codes were exactly the same.
Does that mean that the F5 key is not the issue?
Thank you.

Correct, the F5 key is then not to blame.
You could start vDos with the log option (….vDos.exe /log). The generated vDos.log will report among others some anomalies going on. Perhaps some file is missing or a path incorrect. Post the vDos.log for me to look at.
Could also be some file was damaged copying it from one of the three PC’s.

Apologies for a late reply. I didn't see this thread until now.
That message "put WP disk back etc." sometimes happens with WP 5.x, but I've never seen it with WP 4.2, and I have no idea of what could be causing it. It's very strange that it happens only one on machine. If your computer has an Fn key, try pressing Fn+F5 instead of only F5. I doubt it will change anything, but it can't hurt to try.

Jos.
I ran vDos with the log option and this was the result (sorry, I do not understand it):
vDos 2021.05.01 SetCodePage 437 C: => (Local) C:\vDos\ C: => (Local) c:\wp\
0.02 Execute: C:\wp.exe() Redirect INT 24 ignored, won't be further logged Int 0 => 1D8D:36BC Int 23 => 01A0:0A5C 1.02 Delayed logging, set w/o DOS call: Int 22 => original

I tried FN F5 and nothing at all happened.
Thank you.

Nothing abnormal in the log file.
Remains a damaged file. Could you do a fresh copy of the WP directory of one of the PC’s to the laptop?

Jos. Reloaded WP files 4 times from various reliable sources. Also reloaded vDos from 3 working sources. No luck. Same problem. F5 triggers error -- put back WordPerfect disk. Everything else in WordPerfect works fine. It is just that it cannot access any directories. Macros based on the F5 key also result in error. So I agree the key itself is not the issue. Something in wrong with directory access.
I even tried putting the 3 main vdos files in the WP directory. It worked to invoke WordPerfect but gave the same error.

PC’s, Windows and programs can occasionally appear mystic.
Can you zip all vDos and WP stuff of the laptop and send the file by wetransfer to me. To replicate what’s going on at your laptop.

I tried to post this earlier, but it doesn't seem to have got to the board. Is it possible that 8.3 names are disabled on the new system, and that this is causing the problem?

As an update, I just purchased a new HP computer which is using Windows 11 64-bit. Sadly, the exact same things have happened with it! Exactly -- same folders, same programs, same results.
"Is it possible that 8.3 names are disabled on the new system, and that this is causing the problem?"
emendelson... I am not sure what this means. What are 8.3 names.
Jos, you wrote "Can you zip all vDos and WP stuff of the laptop and send the file by wetransfer to me. To replicate what’s going on at your laptop." I am so sorry, I do not know how to do this. Which zip program do you suggest, and how are you identified on wetransfer? So sorry to be such a novice.
