Don’t think you’ll come in contact with other dBase 4 programmers at this forum. It no community with frequent visitors, most post their problem or question and won’t feel the need to return.
If you still program in dBase, shouldn’t you be now switch to a Windows alternative like Harbour (http://www.xharbour.org)?

Thanks Jos-- Iam currently upgrading my dbase 4.2 to Dbase 2019 which is the "latest and greatest" they say. But my reason for asking the question is to ask if any dBase 4.2 users have used vdos and what there experience was. thanks for the reply I will xharbour as you suggest

You could eventually search for “dBase” at this forum or the old one of SourceForge.

I recently installed vDOS to run dBase 4 ver 1.5. I don't claim to be a dBase programmer but I do run small programs that I created. The programs I have tested all work ok under vDOS but I am seeing some issues with navigating dBase help. Andy

What are those issues, I haven’t noticed any with dBASE IV version 2.0.

What are those issues, I haven’t noticed any with dBASE IV version 2.0. Jos Hi Jos, After playing with Help for a while I think the only issue is that there is no "highlight" so it is not possible to see what you have navigated to. By counting "up" and "down" key presses I can see that the appropriate items are being selected even though they don't have a highlight. Perhaps there is a config setting I have missed. Andy

Set the fore- or background color of highlighted text different from normal text? Tools - Settings - Display.

I fired up the XP computer to get a screen shot of the help display and there is no highlight there either! Seems like that's a dBase problem.
Perhaps the reason I hadn't noticed it is that clicking the item with the mouse does work under XP. So far, I can't make mouse click selection work under vDOS.

You enabled the mouse in config.txt?

You enabled the mouse in config.txt? Jos I had not but I did before I read you message. Now it works and, for the quick test I just ran, there is a visible highlight in the help menu. It seems I have an inappropriate set color command in my dBase initialization file. So all self inflicted and the color issue has been there, either unnoticed or forgotten, for many years. Thanks for sharing vDOS. It may allow me to retire my seldom used XP machine. Andy

Hi. I have uses DataEase 4.53 16M since it was released in the last century. It was a definite improvement on 4.2 but I didn't get on with the Windows versions.
So far with vDOS it has done everything I could do on Windows 7 32-bit, so I assume when I get my shiny new Windows 10 64-bit machine I can just copy it over and carry on.
Anything you want to know?

The request was to meet other dBase 4.2 users. DataEase, although also a database manager, differs completely from dBase. DE is form orientated, create and maintain databases by example. dBase is more a programming language with a database engine integrated.
When you copy vDos and DE to the new PC, there’s no reason the combo won’t run as before. Probably somewhat faster.

Hi I have an App that I built in dBaseIV - I think my version is 1.5 but am not sure. (Haven't had time to figure out how to check yet.) I am running it in VDosPlus which I just discovere is not the same as VDos. Would love to talk to you and others who are familiar with dBaseIV running in any environment and/or who know how I can best move forward with my App onto a machine that is not running an outdated Win OS - currently Win7. I am hoping to be able to run it on Win10 machine or even better on a server accessed via web browser.

Hi,
I will give it a try, but I'm bad with the Englisch language. First of all, you must leave dBase IV and try to get Version V (x58 latest Aug 1994), thats one is almost bugfree. Then there are some settings that are important before you begin. They are not always good in default. Here are some for the config.db: DEVELOPMENT = ON (by chancing alway compile; not working if you copy an older prg over the newer prg; you must then als delete the compiled dbo) PRECISION = 20 (depended on how big your numbers must in relation with the next line) DECIMALS = 0 LANGTABLES = ON (the matched language for the dbf-files and to handle the right language)
In your prg is the next setting depended on how you are programming SET NEAR ON to get EOF() if not found and SET EXAC OFF if you wil found somthing if the match is not complete.
For so far.
Regards Herman
