Using Dataflex, VDOS and Printing, escape characters always tend to be on the first line. Is there something i need to set to stop these characters from printing.

vDos should detect PCL printing, and so take care of those escape code sequences. Format the printout, not print the codes.
Could you submit the #lpt1.asc file generated by vDos to check, replicate the printout.

The Dataflex application prints out to a text file. This is what it looks like. VDOS runs the application dataflex and the user prints not directly to the printer but it is directed to a text file. Is there any setting i need to use in VDOS to remove that ?

So you actually don’t want to print, but get a text file stripped off the escape code sequences?

Yes that is correct. The client has numerous printers that are used for different reports. So the printer is chosen after the information is taken from Dataflex.

If the printers can’t be set in Dataflex, you could let the Windows Select Printer Dialog popup by omitting the SEL: option. Or print to a Virtual PDF printer, that then starts the PDF reader with the generated PDF document, and print from there.
vDos of course won’t strip anything if a program writes to some file. If you want that plain text file, you could install the Generic/Text only printer, set the port to FILE:. And see if that driver correctly ignores all GDI formatting.

thanks, i think the issue is on the Dataflex side.

Hello baronsoftware,
Seems to me a Windows codepage issue.
Try in vDos autoexec.txt CHCP 437 or another codepage before you start dataflex.

Thank you for that advice. It seems that the codepage 437 works fine displaying Dataflex in a VDOS session. It is when i write it out to a text file that it looks like the above mess. So either dataflex is using the Windows 10 default codepage of 1252 or i am missing a setting somewhere.

The problem is the PCL escape code sequences added to the printer output by the program. As of version 2016.10.01 vDos supports these, so an older version would be used. Or vDosPlus based on vDos 2015?

The client is using the latest version. The funny thing is that the Dataflex doesn't do this on a Windows 7 machine since you can still run it. Under Windows 10, we needed VDos to run the Dataflex application.
I guess there isn't much else besides checking the DataFlex.

If it is the latest version, there’s no apparent reason why printing shouldn’t work. You can test this by: - A simple COPY <that text file> LPT7 at the vDos command prompt.
- Direct the printer output in Dataflex to LPT7.
- Rem out an eventually LPT1= directive in config.txt and print.

Thanks, a Windows application actually calls each dataflex application, so that is why it goes to a text file so the user can choose which printer. They are never to see the VDOS command prompt.

vDos doesn’t mind how it is called/started. COPY <that text file> LPT7 was just an example to you how to test vDos actually supports PCL printing. Exporting to some LPTx or COMx port/device/file would be a second step (I choose LPT7 because you won’t use/have set that). The ultimate test is of course to print from the Dataflex application. I still see no reason why that wouldn’t work.
