WIN_VDOS is a DOS environment variable. %%WIN_VDOS%% should actually return an empty string. Not sure why DOS WIN_VDOS is returned instead. Will be some mishap with (incorrect) testing for WIN_VDOS and in place substitution…
You would have to do: echo %WIN_VDOS% or Ease %WIN_VDOS%

I think I solved the problem.
It looks to work ok if I have a single %, rather than 2
Eg: echo %WIN_VDOS% works but echo %%WIN_VDOS%% crashes Autoexec.txt if >10 characters
