I'm not understanding how my config.txt settings work. When activating some settings, I get "Invalid parameter", e.g.
FONT = C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\Courier New and WINDOW = -30
both the above generate the same error message. I'm simply using the suggested settings in config.txt.

FONT = C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\Courier New would/should generate a "FONT = could not load font file": The file Courier New.ttf does not exist.
WINDOW = -30 is valid.
Did you add something before or after those options?

The exact message today is "Could not load TTF font file C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\Courier Invalid Windows=parameters -30". It doesn't change if it's "Courier" or "Courier New" (the name of the font in the Fonts folder)
When the font asked for doesn't load, vDos brings up an unknown default font that is always the same - good, but unknown. The vDos window is too large, and I'm trying to get a smaller window with a good font without error messages. If I rem out all the config settings, the default unknown font is the best appearance, but the window is much too large.

The font name needs to be the filename shown in a CMD window, not the name shown in the graphical Fonts listing. The filename of the font is
cour.ttf
and this line will produce the effect you want:
FONT = C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\COUR.TTF
But you probably won't like the appearance.

According to the error messages, you would be using a pre-2016 version of vDos. So use the config.txt file that came with that, or switch to version 2023.05.01.

According to the error messages, you would be using a pre-2016 version of vDos. Yes - this version of vDos has the nicest default font, but I have no idea what the font is. So I stick with it. Later versions of vDos load a different default font. I've since found that I can shrink the vDos window with Win-F11 so I can keep a vDos window and a Notepad++ window open at the same time for ease of programming. Very convenient.
